Transportation of waste for disposal
An estimated 140,000 truck shipments of nuclear waste and 10,000 rail shipments could pass through the most populous areas of Nevada over a period of 30 years (State of Nevada, 1997).
This amounts to one shipment every hour and 45 minutes over the length of time established to fill the repository (State of Nevada, 1997).
Nevada as well as many other states, face the threat of shipment accidents due to the large number of shipments and the funnel effect that concentrates shipments on specific routes as they approach the site (State of Nevada, 1997).
