Seismic Activity at Yucca Mountain
Nevada ranks third in the nation for current seismic activity (State of Nevada,1997).
33 known Quaternary faults (less than 2 million years old) exist in the vicinity of the site (State of Nevada, 1997).
621 seismic events of magnitudes greater than 2.5 within a 50-mile radius of Yucca Mountain since 1976 (State of Nevada,1997).
On June 29, 1992 an earthquake measuring 5.6 occurred just 8 miles from the site at Little Skull Mountain (State of Nevada, 1997).
20 years of study by the Council of the Nation Seismic System Composite Catalogue and the Southern Great Basin Seismic Network has recorded ongoing seismic process in the vicinity of the Yucca Mountain site and that activity is expected long into the future (State of Nevada, 1997).
