- 1954: The National Academy of Sciences considered burying radioactive waste in geologic formations (EPA, 2000)
- 1979: Yucca Mountain was chosen by the Department of Energy as a possible host site (State of Nevada, 1997).
- 2001: The Secretary of Energy decides whether to recommend to the President that Yucca Mountain be established as a nuclear waste repository site. To date this has not occurred (EPA, 2000).
- 2010: Waste disposal would begin (EPA, 2000).
- After a 28-year emplacement period and a 22-year caretaker phase the repository would be decommissioned and sealed for it’s 10,000 year life (State of Nevada, 1997).
