Secondary Methods of Extraction

• Once the wells have been initially tapped, secondary methods are used to recover as much of the resource as possible

• The intent in secondary methods of extraction is to, “reduce the viscosity of the crude oil” (Kanat, 2001)

• Injection wells are drilled along side original wells pumping steam, water, or chemicals into the reservoir forcing the resource to the surface
