Projected Cost of Project
A January 1997 report by researchers at the USC and former DOE contractors estimate the cost of licensing and constructing the repository at between 10 and 50 billion dollars (State of Nevada, 1997).
Approximately $6.7 billion has been spent during the 14 years of site study (Grove, 2001).
Internal DOE reports show that the estimated cost of Yucca Mountain increases to $75 billion if all public health and safety measures are included (Grove, 2001).
If these estimated cost figures are accurate this would make Yucca Mountain one of the nation’s most expensive projects ever!
