Notes:
- Leading supplier of PEM fuel cells for transportation
- Developing fuel cells for both heavy duty and light duty vehicles
- Has joined forces with Daimler Chrysler and Ford to develop the next generation of efficient and clean engines
Ballard Power Systems is recognized as the world leader in developing, manufacturing and marketing zero-emission proton exchange membrane fuel cells for use in transportation, electricity generation and portable power products. Ballard Power Systems´ proprietary fuel cell technology is enabling automobile, electrical equipment and portable power product manufacturers to develop environmentally clean products for sale.
Ballard is developing its fuel cells for both heavy duty and light duty transportation applications including buses, cars, and trucks. In 1997, Ballard, the world leader in proton exchange membrane fuel cells, Daimler-Benz (now DaimlerChrysler), the quality and innovation leader in the automotive industry, and Ford Motor Company, a leader in electric drive train technology, announced their alliance to develop the next generation of efficient and clean engines for the world's vehicles using the Ballard® fuel cell. These engines will meet the performance and range between refueling requirements of transportation vehicles, including transit buses, automobiles, and trucks. This together with much higher efficiency and significantly lower emissions than with the internal combustion engine are expected to result in fuel cells capturing emerging market opportunities.Fuel cell engines, based on the Ballard fuel cell, will be comparable to conventional engines in size, weight, operating life, acceleration and speed, range and refueling time. Ballard has significantly improved the power density (amount of power produced in a given size and weight) of its fuel cells, demonstrating their practicality for transportation applications. The commercialization focus is now on cost reduction and developing volume manufacturing processes
