Air pollution from smokestacks has been a constant problem for the last 50 years. The Clean Air Act of 1970, and later revised in 1990, has helped to decrease emissions of specific pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides into the atmosphere. Through the proposed Clear Skies Act, the Bush Administration plans to reduce the standards of the Clean Air Act (Wenzler, 2002) and allow as many as 17,000 industrial polluters to continue releasing pollutants at current emission standards (Save, 2002). The air pollution problem is currently affecting human health and our natural environment. We need to move forward by increasing standards, rather than moving backward.
