Glenn and Marga Sproul Endowment for Faculty in Mathematics and Science

Glenn Sproul taught mathematics at Johnson State College from 1970 through 2011. Upon retirement, he and his wife setup the Glenn and Marga Sproul Endowment for Faculty in Mathematics and Science. Initially, the fund was defined to create an endowed chair in mathematics, but it has evolved. Currently the income generated from the endowment provides non-salary support for faculty in the Mathematics and Sciences to improve the quality of their teaching. Do something new.

 

Northern Vermont University Learning and Working Community

The Learning and Working Community vision strives to lower the cost of earning a college degree by engaging students in paid applied learning experiences in addition to providing students opportunities for civic engagement, service learning, and centered well-being.  The applied learning experiences take many forms including internships, cooperative placements, service learning, research, student teaching, study abroad, and entrepreneurial education.  Many of these experiences are provided by community partners, including local businesses and organizations thereby creating a pipeline of engaged, critical thinkers for work, action, and service that will address the critical workforce needs in our Vermont communities.  Many applied learning experiences are also available to students on campus. The Northern Vermont University-Johnson President's Fund for Excellence in Teaching and Learning

The Northern Vermont University-Johnson President’s Fund for Excellence in Teaching and Learning to initiate and strengthen exciting events and emerging academic opportunities. Students are highly encouraged to apply and will receive equal consideration. The fund can cover a wide variety of activities, so please think carefully about what you would like to do!

Northern Vermont University-Johnson Student Services

Northern Vermont University-Johnson offers scholarships, loans, student employment, and financial aid. Be sure to apply for the award given in memory of Professor Cyrus B. McQueen, to support students conducting research in the sciences at NVUJ. An essay on your research project must be submitted with your application. Also, consider the Margaret Ottum scholarship, awarded to a NVUJ junior or senior majoring in Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or Environmental Education. The student selected must have at least a 'B' average and have demonstrated a commitment to the College or to community service. The required essay should address the student's special area(s) of environmental interest and how he or she "hopes to make a difference in the world."


Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The FAFSA is required for families who want to apply for federal aid, grants, loans, and work study awards for higher education. Everyone with a student attending or going to attend college next year should complete the FAFSA as soon as possible.


Vermont Geological Society

The primary goal of the Vermont Geological Society Research Grant Program is to promote and support original research on Vermont geology by undergraduate and graduate students and secondary school teachers (grades 7-12). The grant program does not seek to cover all of the researcher's expenses but instead should be viewed as a professional endorsement of the research endeavor. Requests for grants are judged on how well the proposed research will advance the science of geology and its related branches within the State of Vermont.

Vermont Student Assistance Corporation

The Vermont Student Assistance Corp. was created in 1965 as a public nonprofit agency to help Vermonters who want to go to college or other training after high school. We provide grants, loans, scholarships, career and education planning, and general information about how you, or others in your family, can get the education you want.

Burlington Gem and Mineral Club

The primary goal of the Burlington Gem and Mineral Club Ethel and William Schuele Scholarship is to promote and support original research on Vermont geology by undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a college or university within the State of Vermont.

Basin Resilience to Extreme Events (BREE) Internships

The Undergraduate Internship Program offers students the opportunity to participate in current research conducted through the Research on Adaptation to Climate Change (RACC) program. Undergraduates selected to participate in the RACC program will be matched with a research team of faculty and graduate students working on the transdisciplinary RACC research program. Students will be payed $5000 for summer research.


VT EPSCoR Scholarships for Native American (including Abenaki) and First Generation college students

The VT EPSCoR Center for Workforce Development and Diversity (CWDD) works to cultivate and prepare a diverse science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workforce in Vermont by inspiring students to enter STEM careers. As part of our work we are pleased to award $5000 scholarships to Native American (including Abenaki) and First Generation college students who enter STEM majors at a Vermont institution of higher education. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic standing, letters of recommendation, and an essay detailing career goals.


Vermont Biomedical Research Network

The Vermont Biomedical Research Network has a goal of increasing Vermont’s infrastructure for biomedical research through funding faculty research at the baccalaureate institutions and involving undergraduates in this research. The Network also supports student research through numerous summer internship opportunities.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program was created to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering and to foster excellence in those fields. In awarding $7500 scholarships, the Foundation Board of Trustees will consider the nominee's field of study and career objectives and the extent to which that individual has the commitment and potential to make a significant contribution to his or her field.

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation - the federal memorial to our thirty-third President - awards merit-based $30,000 scholarships to college students who plan to pursue careers in government or elsewhere in public service, and wish to attend graduate or professional school to help prepare for their careers. Truman Scholars participate in leadership development programs and have special opportunities for internships and employment with the federal government.

The Rockefeller Foundation

The new aim of the Rockefeller Foundation is to improve poor people's lives and livelihoods through the application of knowledge, science, technology, research and analysis, said Professor Gordon Conway, president of the Rockefeller Foundation. The challenges are enormous much of the world continues to live in absolute poverty, trapped in hunger, disease, illiteracy and joblessness. To address these challenges we will employ a new type of philanthropy, one that is global in scope, collaborative and scientific in its approach.

The Fulbright Program

The Fulbright Program was established in 1946, at the end of World War II, to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries, through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills. Grants are made to citizens of participating countries, primarily for university teaching, advanced research, graduate study, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. Four faculty members at JSC have received Fulbright Awards: Shaw, DiGiulio, Kanat, and Ottum; it's now time for one of our students to be the recipient of this award.

Morris K. Udall Scholarships

Each year, the Foundation awards undergraduate scholarships of up to $5,000 to American sophomores and juniors in fields related to the environment, and to Native American and Alaska Natives in fields related to health care or tribal policy.

Unique Scholarships

So what does a wacky scholarship look like, and what makes it so unique? Well, these scholarships seek to reward unique student traits that may have otherwise gone overlooked. Check below for a few examples of strange scholarships that have been popular over the last few years.

NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship Program

The program will provide about 110 college undergraduates up to $28,425 to support academic studies related to NOAA science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities, and a related internship designed to provide a "hands-on," multi-disciplinary training experience. Applications are due May 23, 2005. Eligible undergraduates studying biological, life, and agricultural sciences; physical sciences; mathematics; engineering; computer and information sciences; social and behavioral science; and teacher education are encouraged to apply.

Public Health Scholarships

It is possible to offset some of the costs of earning a public health degree by tapping into a variety of available public health scholarships. Application processes and award amounts vary from program to program, but students may apply for multiple scholarships simultaneously.

The Excel Builders Scholarship

All applicants should fill out the scholarship application and include a personal statement and an essay. The winning entrant will receive a check in the amount of $1,000 which may be used without restriction in the winning entrant’s sole discretion.

Amgen Scholars Program

The Amgen Scholars U.S. Program provides hundreds of selected undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in a hands-on research experience at some of the nation's leading educational institutions. Currently, 10 universities in the U.S. host the summer research program.

National Wildlife Federation Student Fellowships

Switzer Foundation

The goal of the Switzer Environmental Fellowship Program is to support highly talented graduate students in New England and California whose studies are directed toward improving environmental quality and who demonstrate leadership in their field. Awards have been made to students pursuing environmental policy studies, economics, engineering, public health, and law as well as the more traditional sciences: biology, chemistry and physics. Technical knowledge, analytical skills and environmental experience are important components of a successful application, regardless of field of study.

The National Science & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART)

The National SMART Grant is available during the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security. The student must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 in coursework required for the major. This grant is in addition to the student's Federal Pell Grant award.

The Rhodes Scholarship Trust

The Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest international fellowships, were initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, and bring outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. American Rhodes Scholars are selected through a decentralized process by which regional selection committees choose thirty-two Scholars each year from among those nominated by selection committees in each of the fifty states. In most years, a Rhodes Scholar is selected from an institution that has not formerly supplied a successful applicant.

Joseph L. Fisher Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships

Fellowships for the coming academic year are awarded in support of doctoral dissertation research on issues related to the environment, natural resources, or energy. RFF’s primary research disciplines are economics and other social sciences.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowships

Offers three-year graduate research fellowships in science, mathematics, and engineering, including Women in Engineering and Computer and Information Science awards. Fellowships are awarded for graduate study leading to research-based master's or doctoral degrees in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, and behavioral and social sciences, including the history of science and the philosophy of science, and to research-based Ph.D. degrees in science education.

To ensure adequate human resources and to improve knowledge and skills in the fields of air and waste management, the A&WMA provides financial support to qualifying graduate students.
